ALFA ROMEO Car Design History - Automobile manufacturer

According to company legend, Henry Ford once said that every time he saw an Alfa Romeo, he tipped his hat.

Alfa Romeo was founded in 1910, Italy's only major automobile manufacturer based in Milan rather than Turin. Initially, the Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili manufactured primarily utility vehicles and aircraft engines and compressors for the defense industry, which became an important client during the First and Second World Wars. But even in its earliest years, Alfa Romeo triumphed in the racing arena. Its 24 HP racing model won the 1911 Targa Florio, establishing a precedent for the Alfa RL s great successes of the 1920s and the countless victories that followed.

For many years, the construction of racing engines drove Alfa's entire automobile output. Starting in the 1930s, though, the company hired renowned car-body makers to translate speed and power into more satisfying outer forms. For the 1937 8 C 2900 B sports roadster, Touring created a body that seemed to have been poured into place; PininFarina's aerodynamic ' design for the 6 C 2300 Pescare Coupe of 1936 displayed the car's power in aggressively swelling fenders and low-mounted headlights. With the end of the Second World War and Italy's rise to prosperity, Alfa Romeo gradually shifted into large-scale production. The elegant Giulietta series of the mid-1950s, for which both Bertone and Pinin Farina designed body variants, marked Alfa Romeo's successful breakthrough to a broader market. In the fifties and sixties, the company succeeded inter-nationally with models such as the Spider 1600 Duetto of 1966 and Pinin Farina's Spider 1750 of 1969, both of which have since attained cult status. One of the most Alfas was the 1972 Alfasud, for whose production a new plant was built.

In the early 1970s the company slipped into a lingering financial crisis that led to Alfa Romeo's acquisition by Fiat in the mid-1980s. Under its new owner, Alfa Romeo has continued to produce cars noted for their sporty performance and design, such as the sleek 164 Berlina of 1987, with its narrow taillight section, and the wedge-shaped ES 30 of 1989. More recently, the Alfa 156 was voted Germany's Car of the Year, not least because of its beautiful design.
